Comforting Handspun Cotton Sarees

Items created by hand contain a different sense of charm and attachment to them. In terms of skill, handicraft items are considered extremely precious and authentic. The same goes for textiles and jewellery as well. India already has a strong historical significance in creating our own fabrics. The swadeshi movement wherein Mahatma Gandhi inspired the nation to produce our own fabric saw the cotton revolution. The Charkha movement introduced handspun cotton fabric that was used to fulfil the country’s clothing needs. Hence, handspun cotton sarees hold a significant place in the history of India and our cultural heritage.

Difference between Handspun and Handloom Sarees?

Traditional fabrics were woven using two different methods: Handloom and Handspun.

The handloom method involved making saree fabrics on traditional looms with the help of threads made out of raw cotton. This raw cotton was first cleaned and processed into threads, which were used to weave into a dazzling array of colours and patterns in different weights.

Handspun method was a process unto itself, which involves spinning yarn manually out of raw cotton fibres to be used on conventional looms for weaving gorgeous sarees. Essentially, it's an all-manual process for preparing thread from its original raw form to the ready-to-weave saree fabric.

Why do Indian women love cotton sarees?

The pure handcrafted cotton fabric is perfect for that rich and luxurious feel. The special dyeing process enhances the brightness of colours and gives a long-lasting & bright effect. Cotton sarees are also perfect for the Indian humid weather. Their breathability helps women move on with their chores with ease, throughout the day. They are also easy to maintain and look extremely elegant when worn properly. The simple texture of these sarees allows for a minimalist look with class.

These cotton sarees are available in jamdani, ponduru, phulia, dhakai muslin, tussar and many such fabrics. They have beautiful handpainted designs, motifs, temple borders as well as self prints.
