History of Bandhani Fabric

Bandhani (also known as bandhej) is a traditional Indian style of tie-dyeing cloth with many different names and a long history. The name comes from the Hindi words bandhna (""to tie"") and bandhan (""a bond""). For centuries, pure silk bandhani dress material has been used to create colorful and unique clothing for women, men, children, babies, and accessories. It's also used in interior design. Though it was originally created in India, this fabric has spread throughout the world, though it is most popular in India and Pakistan. The roots of this technique come from Gujarat and Rajasthan in India, where it is still practiced today. The word ""bandhani"" refers to both the fabric itself and the style of dyeing it.

The Dyeing Process

The knotted areas do not take the dye, and therefore remain the original color of the fabric. This technique is also called bandhej, bandhani, and bandhani, and it's usually done on fabrics like silk, georgette, and cotton. Once the dye has finished soaking into the fabric, it's washed. Then the thread is removed to reveal the original color of the fabric underneath! The quality of a piece of bandhani depends on how even and tight the tying process was.

Designs on Bandhani

The bandhani process can be used with different types of tying—like stitched pleats, lep (a dot pattern), Ekdali (blossoms), Shikari (a hunting scene), Mothra (circles) Kharek (the square pattern), Amboi (a leaf or mango shape), or Patori (a small cloth pattern)—which all result in various designs. Once the pattern has been created by tying threads around parts of the fabric, dye is applied to the material.
