Kakatiya Dynasty - 13th Century (The Queen ahead of her times — Kakatiya’s pride)

13th century’s game changer, the times when women were suppressed, this Queen changed the rules of the game and proved it that she was in par with the other men. Rudrama Devi- the queen who won a war to prove that she was a worthy successor to the Kakatiya kingdom. She proved her mettle and her father designated her as the son through the “Putrika ceremony”.

Despite being able, valorous, and a just human being her coronation was not an easy process. She faced a great deal of opposition for a simple reason that the men hated being under a woman's authority. Intelligent and diplomatic as she was, was quite successful in asserting her sovereignty and quelled the rebellion rulers with support from citizens and numerous small rulers. She was successful in completing the Warangal fort started by her father. Marco Polo the Venetian traveller, who paid a visit during her rule, wrote that she was a lover of justice, equity and peace.

We styled our Rudramma devi in a majestic kanchi-pattu in rich red adorned with the royal animals in red. Animals used in warfare like the horse and the elephants are a regular feature in kanchi pattu weaves. Another common feature being the noble peacock which were always seen as a guardian to the royalty. The zamindari border in gold tissue was a status symbol worn only by the royal lineage. Rani Rudramma has been set against a backdrop of the Kakatiya dynasty’s map with pins pointing at Orugallu (Current day Warangal) and strategic plan drafts since she is an able administrator, warrior, diplomat and earned the right to be a queen by proving her mettle despite belonging to the royal lineage.The animals used by the noble families for hunting, wars or reared as muse are a recurring theme on the handloom saree and are known as the Shikarr gha motifs.Back in the days what they saw is what was woven on the sarees and hence have volumes to speak of those times.
