Family

Her father was a Marine engineer in Mumbai. Her mother was a homemaker who took care of her family after Nirupa’s father passed away when Nirupa was only 4 years old. Her mother readily took the responsibility leaving Nirupa starstruck with her resilience and discipline. This discipline also inspired her to join the National Cadet Corps (N.C.C.) during her time in college. Her hard work eventually led her to acquire the post of Senior Under Officer. This is when Nirupa realised her potential and learned to maintain her winning streak.

Nirupa’s Journey to G.I.A.

Nirupa first chose to be an armed officer, but at the time, there were no recruitments for women officers. Hence, she turned her career toward teaching. Her tenure as a teacher was very fulfilling, as she got to do two of the things she loved most: learn and teach!

After that, Nirupa started working as an assistant in an export business. The company was actively involved in handicrafts and electricals. This was an opportunity for Nirupa to travel and explore, broadening her horizons. She started to be more accepting of new things and circumstances.

Nirupa later joined the Bombay Management Chamber, and following that, she got a job with the Trade Office of Sweden in Mumbai. This was a huge milestone for her as she further established herself as an all-rounder. Her time with the Swedish Trade office led to her pivotal role at Argyle, where she first stepped into the jewellery business.

Nirupa Bhatt’s journey in the gems and jewellery industry began spontaneously. However, it evolved into a notable career filled with courage and innovation. In her lifetime and career, she faced a lot of scepticism and gender-biased struggles, but she excelled in Argyle, which led to bridging Australian mining with India’s interest. While she was in Argyle, she witnessed the establishment of the Indo-Argyle Diamond Council and the introduction of the business excellence model, setting industry standards.

Life at G.I.A

In 2008, she joined the Gemological Institute of America as the Managing Director of India and the Middle East. During her time at G.I.A., she expanded educational activities, solidifying their presence. Nirupa Bhatt has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards for her work, which extends beyond her career achievements.

Nirupa remained committed to the development of G.I.A. Her zeal and success led her to found the Women’s Jewellery Association in India, which underscores how powerful she has been in her career and elsewhere. Nirupa’s approach to professionalism and innovation, along with a streak of being warm, kind, and forever open to learning, makes her a woman of immense capability.

Conclusion

An industry that men have always dominated saw a transformation when a woman decided to step in and take charge. That woman is today an example of resilience and is celebrated by Kankatala, women can take on roles that men do and succeed while wearing sarees.

Kankatala celebrates ‘Heroes in Sarees’ as we put the spotlight on 8 real-life women achievers who have managed to break the glass ceiling in various fields while draped in a saree. This initiative aims to highlight the fact that there is nothing a woman in a saree cannot do.
